    BASKETBALL DRILLS

Don McCormack Fast Break Block Drill – 3 players in the lane, , Coach intentionally misses a shot and players fight for the rebound, rebounder dribbles down the center of the court, and other 2 players sprint full court to the opposite blocks to receive the fast break pass from the one who got the rebound.

Dribble Tag.  All kids know and love tag.  Just add a basketball for each player and set boundaries (three point circle or half court for larger groups) and let them go at it.  Gets them dribbling with their head up since they have to see the player to tag him.  May want to divide them into two groups based on talent level to keep the games competitive for all.  Fun five minutes when you sense you might be losing their attention.

Stretch   Go through rules of the game while every player “owns” a ball – coach walks around while talking and tries to slap ball out of each players hands

Dribble around perimeter of court with strong hand (muscle memory)

½ court layups (muscle memory) – Make 9 out of 10 every time

2 BASKET POWER LAYUP DRILL (muscle memory) - One ball on each block with a rebounder manning each ball, one shooter starts in the middle with no ball.  At coach’s “GO” command, shooter picks up a ball from one block and lays it in, then runs to the other block, picks up the ball, and lays it in, then runs back to the other block , picks up the ball, and lays it in, etc., for 30 seconds.  The two rebounders keep chasing THEIR ball and putting it back down on the block and are responsible for keeping track of the number of made layups in 30 seconds.  After 30 seconds the players rotate shooters.

Free Throw Practice (remember B.E.E.F. principles) – Set goals for each player

Team Drills
RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT (BLUE LIGHT, YELLOW LIGHT) - Have a group of kids start at one baseline, don't bunch them too closely together. Each child in the group has a ball. When the facilitator shouts green light the children dribble forward and red they stop. All during this youth basketball drill the children keep dribbling.

RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT (BLUE LIGHT, YELLOW LIGHT) - Have a group of kids start at one baseline, don't bunch them too closely together. Each child in the group has a ball. When the facilitator shouts green light the children dribble forward, blue and they dribble left, yellow they dribble right, and of course red they stop. All during this youth basketball drill the children keep dribbling.

SPEED LAY-UP DRILL - Coach times player for 1 minute; team counts aloud number of shots made and encourages player along the way. Player with a basketball stands to the right of the basket on the block, coach says 'GO' and player shoots a layup (using backboard) from right side... then miss or make goes to left side block. She continues to alternate sides, team counts how many are made in one minute. Coach may decide to give stronger players 45 seconds, weaker players 1 minute +.

SPEED DRIBBLE - Players start at 1/2 court or baseline. Each line or player has a ball. Objective is to reduce the number of dribbles. Let the players cover the required distance and count their dribbles. Have them cover the same distance and reduce the dribbles by 1. Repeat and reduce by 1 again. Continue reducing until you have increased speed.

HEADS UP - Minimum of two players spaced 5-8 feet apart (depending on age level). Each player has a basketball and one has a wiffle golf ball or ping pong ball. Dribbling with your good hand (proper form required) you underhand pass the ping pong ball back and forth while dribbling. If you miss the ping pong ball dribble to get it and continue the drill. Switch to your off hand and continue drill (5-10 min drill total)

BEAN BAG GAME - Using half court place one team at center court, and one team at the corners of the baseline. Each team has one ball. Place bean bags in key circle in a pile. On coaches command one player from each team dribbles into the key.  While still dribbling the players must bend down and pick up a bean bag each.  They must then dribble back to their team while still dribbling, deposit the bean bag, and give the ball to their next team member. This process continues until all bean bags are gone, then they are able to steal bean bags from the other teams. After two minutes the team with the most bean bags wins. NOTE: Only one bean bag is able to be taken at a time.

Rebounding Principles
1. Assume every shot will be missed.                                                                                                2. Box out
3. Get your hands above your shoulders.
4. Go get the ball (pursue it).

Ball Handling
Ball slaps – slap ball in a repeating motion from one hand to the other – increase speed and velocity
Ball Tips – tip ball left to right to left with arms extended out in front and move ball up and down shoulders to waist
Circle Drill around each leg
Figure 8
Butterfly (Figure 8 no dribble)
Windmill (Butterfly backwards no dribble)
Circle Drill around the waist
Circle Drill around both legs
Drops – hold ball in between legs and drop it while flipping hands opposite – only let ball bounce once before grabbing it, then repeating
Under Right Leg – back and forth like yo-yo
Under left Leg – back and forth like yo-yo
Stationary Crossover – right dribble, kill right hand dribble, crossover to left hand dribble, kill left hand dribble, crossover to right hand dribble, kill right hand dribble, crossover to left hand dribble (hear the rhythm)
Stationary Crossover and Swing – right, left, right real high, left, right, left real high, right, left, right real high, etc. (hear the rhythm) Spider
Butterfly
Windmill (Butterfly backwards)
Spin Move (Reverse Dribble)
Side V Dribble
Front V Dribble
Dribble 2 balls
Dribble 2 balls – Pistons (alternate)
Dribble 2 balls – Side V Dribble
Dribble out 6 feet, Quick-Stop, 180 degree pivot, throw ball to player behind you in line (3-4 players in each line)

Passing
Chest Pass (follow through with thumbs pointed at receiver’s chest)
Front Cut – simple give-and-go and player cuts above the defender to the hoop
Back Cut – give-and-go but player V-cuts towards teammate with ball, then back around the back of defender to hoop

Jab Step and Shoot – Take a full step right at the defender while holding your pivot foot, pause one second, then shoot if the player has backed off of you
Jab Step and Drive – Take a full step right at the defender while holding your pivot foot, pause one second, then drive if the player stayed close to you (dribble past the defender’s foot that is closest to you)

Figure 8 – 2 lines across from each other spaced 6-8 feet apart, pass to player directly across from you, then run to the left or right according to coach’s command.  Coach will also mix direction and type of pass up while players are in motion once they have the basics mastered.

3 Man Weave – start on base line and run full court 3 man weave – no layup at the end, reorganize and come back to starting point

Jump Hook into the Lane – receive the ball in the post, fake shoulders to baseline, then pivot and dribble across the lane while taking a jump hook

Up and Under (the Ray Armstrong) – Strong Shot Fake, wait for defender to get up in the air, then dip, pivot, and take one power dribble to the hoop and layup

Mikan Drill – left hand and right hand layup motion back and forth – ball never comes below shoulders
Mikan Drill not layups – left hand layups and right hand layups flat-footed – ball never comes below the shoulder
